Important information from Versiti regarding the urgent need for blood donations:

• Versiti is experiencing an urgent need for blood in our five-state footprint.
• The need for type-O blood is especially critical as it is the most common blood type. Anyone with type-O blood is asked to please donate, but any blood type is accepted. If you do not know your blood-type, the best way to find out is to sign up to donate.
• There have been multiple recent organ transplant procedures at our partner hospitals that have required a significant volume of blood, causing our blood inventory to get dangerously low.
• Versiti has also experienced a large number of blood donation appointment cancellations and appointment no-shows.
• When our blood inventory gets as low as it is now, it jeopardizes the health and safety of patients who rely on life-saving blood transfusions. In some cases, hospitals are forced to postpone surgeries or delay critical treatments.
• Trauma victims from car accidents or shootings are at the highest risk, as their survival often depends on a healthy blood inventory. If these types of cases occur in the coming days, we might not have the blood needed to keep them alive.
• Patients undergoing organ transplants and battling cancer, and even mothers in labor could face treatment delays or complications due to a limited blood supply.
• If Versiti doesn’t improve our blood inventory levels in the short-term, we will be forced to go on an emergency appeal for blood.

Report on our most recent blood drive:

We had a great turnout for our blood drive on June 18! Of 39 scheduled donors, we collected 39 units of blood products toward our 40-unit goal for 98% of the goal, potentially saving 117 lives. The generosity of our donors could not have come at a better time to help the Blood Center meet patient needs in our local hospitals that care for all our families and saving hundreds of local patient lives in the weeks to come. Thanks to every person who donated blood. We know summer is a busy time but the need for blood is even greater during the summer. Can you help?  Our next blood drive will be Tuesday August 20, 2024.
